Health Concerns & Women

There is growing evidence that some of the health concerns that especially affect women may be linked to environmental contaminants. Some examples include:

Fertility Challenges
According to a recent national survey, 12 percent of the reproductive age population in the United States, or 7.3 million couples, report difficulty conceiving or carrying a pregnancy to term, or both of these problems.

Diabetes
There has been a 46 percent increase in women with diabetes since the mid-1990s.

Endometriosis
Endometriosis affects about 1 in 10 women in the United States, and nearly 40 percent of women with infertility appear to have endometriosis.

Heart Disease
Cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of death in the United States, and the No. 1 cause of death for women.

Breast Cancer
A woman has a one in eight chance of having breast cancer in her lifetime, but less than one in 10 of those women are born with a genetic predisposition for the disease.
